I just received my confirmation from EXPLORE and I want to participate in Language at Work! What do I need to do?

Text to come!!

Who can participate in Languages at Work?

To participate in the program, you must be:

  • an Explore Bursary recipient;
  • between 16 and 30 years old*;
  • a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • available to work after the Explore Program course session;
  • interested in working in your immersion language.

* Some institutions may not accept participants under 18 in the Languages at Work program

Types of jobs offered?

The main criteria for approving a job offer is whether it provides a concrete opportunity for the participant to practice their second language skills in a professional environment. Thus, many jobs are in retail, the tourism industry, catering and accommodation, summer camps, etc. ...

How are employers and employees matched?

The selection of candidates will be based on their resumes, the interview process they will go through and the specific needs of employers.

What is the salary offered for the job placement?

You will work approximately 35 hours per week and you will receive your host province's minimum wage, plus one dollar.

Moreover, a salary indexation for labour mobility (1,35$/hour worked) will be added to your salary to help you pay for your accommodation and your travel expenses. In certain institutions, your accommodation will be provided by the program. In such cases, you will not receive the salary indexation.

What about accommodation after the end of the Explore program?

You become responsible for your own accommodation. Some institutions will allow you to stay in residence after the end of the Explore program for a fee. Elsewhere, you will be responsible for finding a host family or joining a group of Languages at Work participants and renting something together! Remember that there’s a project officer on site who is responsible for lending you a helping hand with this!

Who covers the cost of transportation?

The participant is responsible for his transportation costs to and from the Explore program. However, if a participant decides, throughout the Explore program, to take part in the Languages at Work program, we will refund the fees for changing the date of your return trip (with proof of payment).

Am I guaranteed a job?

It is important to note that we cannot guarantee you a job. Ultimately, the number of placements depends on the number of employers recruited and the number of Explore bursary recipients who wish to benefit from the program.

Can I work in a different region than where I did my Explore program?

Unfortunately, the work experience must be in the same region as where you did your Explore program.

I was an Explore bursary recipient last year; am I eligible to participate in the Languages at Work program this year?

Both programs must be done consecutively during the same summer.

When will the job placement begin?

The job starts immediately after the end of your Explore program.

If I’m 30 years old or older, am I still eligible?

The Languages at Work program is designed for youth between 16* and 30 years old, inclusively.
